It is said that during the Dark Days, prior to the rise of the Three Races, that living beings composed entirely of rock and stone walked the surface of Domus. These living effigies, or Shards, were born without light and thus are hard and cold with little patience for other creatures. When the Sun rose on Domus for the first time, the warm light burned the Shards and they were forced to seek shelter underground. As those who regard Varros as their god, the Shards took it as an affront when dwarves made a similar claim and have since become their sworn enemy. After the Stone War, few Shards remain in existence today, and even fewer people can make claims to meeting one (and surviving the incident to speak of it).
